One of the longest transfer saga in this Summer's transfer window has finally been put to bed after French club Paris Saint German announced the signing of Attacking full-back, Hakimi Achraf from Serie A champions, Inter Milan. The Moroccan right back became a subject of interest from many top clubs across Europe after a successful campaign with Inter Milan, where he won the Italia Serie A title, contributing at both ends of the field.
Once title winning Coach, Antonio Conte left the club, it became obvious that Inter Milan will need to sell one or two players in other to balance things up, because of the effect of COVID-19. Out of the many clubs Hakimi Achraf was linked with, Chelsea and PSG are the two clubs that showed major interest in signing him. However, after PSG announced the signing of the young full back, we take a look at one thing the transfer speaks about Chelsea's transfer activities this summer.
This time last season, Chelsea were busy plucking top talents across Europe. As early as February last year, Chelsea had agreed the deal to sign Hakim Ziyech from Ajax, and early in that summer, they signed Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, when the Germany striker seems to be on his way to Liverpool, such is the financial capacity Chelsea had then. Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz also joined in big money moves last summer. However, despite winning the Champions League title in May, Chelsea are yet to complete a deal this summer.
They seem to have been prized out of all their summer transfer targets. They were seriously interested in Hakimi Achraf early this summer, but the interest cool after PSG entered the race. In my opinion, the manner in which PSG out-muscled Chelsea in the transfer pursuit of Achraf shows that despite winning the UCL Last season, Chelsea doesn't have the financial capacity to compete with some top clubs across the World anymore. However, that can be attributed to two things, which are, first, the amount of money spent on new signings last semester, and secondly, the negative impact of COVID-19 on clubs finances.
Who do you suggest Chelsea should sign instead after missing out on the Moroccan prodigy?
