Why Rohr needs to give Mikel-likened midfielder who plays for Hamburg a chance to compete with Ndidi

Adewale Adeyemi

Creating a strong team to compete for every competition the Nigerian national team will be involved in will be the objective of Gernot Rohr when it is safe for football to return.

In order to achieve this, he needs to have at least two quality players in each position on the pitch of play.

Although the Super Eagles of Nigeria looks like a complete team - they are short of numbers in midfield where they have only the quadruple of Joe Aribo, Oghenekaro Etebo, Alex Iwobi, and Wilfred Ndidi.

Of the names mentioned above, Wilfred Ndidi is the only play that does not have a direct and quality replacement in the squad which is not safe for the team heading to the 2021 AFCON and 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Even though the Leicester City midfielder has been impressive for both club and country, the need to find a quality backup for the Nath Boys academy graduate is paramount for the Nigeria national team so as to be safe in case of any unforeseen circumstances heading into both tournaments.

That is why the former Bordeaux defender is urged to extend a call-up to Mikel-likened midfielder, Jonas David who plays for Hamburger SV in Germany.

The presence of the youngster who just signed a three-year deal with the German club will create competition for Ndidi, and also provides the country with a quality back-up for the former Genk midfielder.

WHY HE DESERVES A CHANCE WITH EAGLES.

Despite his young age, the Mikel-like midfielder is valued at Hamburg due to his immense potential and ability to play in several positions.

Just like Ndidi, the 20-year-old can play as a central defender and as a defensive midfielder effectively.

The youngster is good with the ball at his feet also as an intelligent understanding of the game which helps him reads the game, make impressive tackles and interception.

Although there is a lot to learn and develop in his game but the presence of the 20-year-old would provide the former Bayern Munich defender a credible replacement for Wilfred Ndidi.
