Former Super Eagles star, Yisa Sofoluwe, also known as Dean of Defence, has died. According to report, the 53-year-old ex-Super Eagles star died on Tuesday evening at the Intensive Care Unit of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
Few days ago, the news of the former Super Eagles star being ill broke out which got the attention of some Nigerians as Yisa Sofoluwe was reportedly diagnosed of brain disease. According to report, he was waiting to have his surgery at LUTH before his demise on Tuesday evening.
According to PUNCH Newspaper, they got in touch with one of Yisa Sofoluwe's close friend, Waidi Akanni, who revealed that Sofoluwe died on Tuesday evening and they are planning to go to LUTH on Wednesday to get his remains. The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, was reportedly said to have sent money through another former Super Eagles star at the weekend so as to foot the bills of Yisa Sofoluwe.
Yisa Sofoluwe made 40 appearances for the Super Eagles and found the back of the net just once. During his playing days with Nigeria between 1983 and 1988, Yisa Sofoluwe was the country's regular left back and he also featured for Nigeria in the 1984 and 1988 African Nations Cup. His nickname, 'Dean of Defence', was given to him by late Radio Nigeria commentator, Ernest Okonkwo.
