During Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday, Cesar Azpilicueta stated that the VAR referee recommended referee Anthony Taylor to dismiss Reece James.

Azpilicueta, speaking to BBC Sport, said: “Harsh. Reece's plight is one that I sympathize with. The VAR advised the referee to grant it. He walked over to the television to view just one replay.

“In the same conduct, we received a double punishment: a red card and a penalty, as well as two yellow cards. We were enraged. However, you must remain cool and discover a method to battle as a team. I believe the squad battled hard, and in the second half, we had the best two chances.”

To Sky Sports, he said, "I'd like to know if he initially touches the ball with his leg, which might be [a mitigating factor]." We had a meeting, and you know the handball rule... it's tricky.

“The ball is on the line in this position, and he simply touched it with his knee and then his arm. I realize the arm is a little more away from the body, but we can't sprint with our arms attached to our bodies. As a result, it's really challenging and tricky as a defender.”
