PSG are regarded as the pre-tournament favourites to lift the UCL and have been tipped to go all the way to win it this season, considering that they have added the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, and some other players as well. However, Pochettino made a comment about Chelsea in his UCL pre-match press conference on Tuesday that reveals who truly should be rated as the favourite for the UCL this season.
Metro Sports has a record of Mauricio Pochettino's comments on their official site. However, let me quote what he said here.
He said: "On paper, Chelsea and PSG appear to be the two teams to defeat, but Chelsea is the current champion, thus they are the team to beat, especially after improving their squad.
"We haven't yet formed a team. This summer, we were able to bring in a number of new players. There are some well-known names, but we must work together as a unit.
"At the conclusion of the season, we know we'll be judged on our performance. All of the clubs are under pressure, and we know that the Champions League has been PSG's primary goal for several years.."
In view of the above, here are two important things Pochettino said about Chelsea and PSG and where they stand currently in the UCL.
1. Chelsea are the team to beat.
Chelsea may not be tagged as favourites to lift the UCL, but Chelsea are definitely the team to beat this season. Chelsea are the current defending champions, so it is expected that they will mount a very strong title challenge this season as well.
However, Chelsea have made a very good addition to their squad with the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan, and yesterday, they kicked off their UCL campaign with a win against Zenit Saint Petersburg on Tuesday night. Coincidentally, Lukaku happens to be the scorer of the goal.
2. PSG are not yet a team.
Despite signing big names like Messi and Sergio Ramos, who are four-time Champions League winners, PSG are still not a true team like Chelsea, according to Pochettino.
Big names do not truly define a team.It is the unity of purpose that makes the team grow and achieve success. Like Pochettino acknowledged, they are yet to form a team.
In Chelsea, we see a proper team that plays as a unit on Tuesday in the Champions League, and this should be a pre-requisite for rating a favorite.
Will PSG eventually become a unit as time progresses? Time is the great revealer of the unknown. However, we are certain that Chelsea is a very tight and compact unit that is poised to defend the UCL title this season and should be rated as the UCL favorite. Don't you agree?
