Tokyo 2020: D'Tigers Of Nigeria Suffer Their First Olympics Defeat To Australia

In the men's basketball tournament at the Tokyo Olympics, the D'Tigers were defeated by Australia 84-67 in the opening game of Group B.

Mike Brown picked a starting five that included the team's captain, Vincent Gabe Nnamdi, and the fearsome quartet of Josh Okogie, Miye Oni, Chikezie Okpala, and Precious Achiuwa.

The Nigerians fought courageously for the first three quarters, but were blown out in the final as the Australians came out on top.

Nigeria came back from a 19-12 hole to tie the game at 23 all in the first quarter.

The resurgence was fuelled by three-pointers from Jordan Nwora, the newly crowned NBA champion, and Obi Emegano.

The Nigerians started the third quarter on the back-foot, but Achiuwa's superb defensive play kept the Australians at bay.

D'Tigers, on the other hand, lost the quarter 58-52 due to weak offensive play.

Australia came out firing in the fourth quarter, establishing their authority over the game by scoring 26 points to beat the D'Tigers 84-65.

Nigeria will hope for a better performance when they face Germany on Wednesday in the second group game.
