Manchester united were in premier league action against Southampton at Old trafford on Wednesday evening.
The home side were looking to win their first league game in three matches after losing to Sheffield united and drawing to Arsenal in their last two outings. Southampton on the other hand were also looking to arrest their recent league in the league having failed to win any of their last three games in the league.
The match began in the worse possible way for Southampton as they were reduced to ten men in the first minute of game as Alexandre Jankewitz was shown a straight red for a dangerous tackle on Scott McTomminay.
United looked to take advantage of their advantage in numbers and they did just as they hit four goals before the end of first half as strikes from Aaron Wan Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, an own goal from Jan Bednarak and a well taken header from Edinson Cavani sent the home team well clear at halftime.
United added to their four goal tally in the second half as substitute Anthony Martial scored a double either side of goals from Scott McTomminay, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James as united ran out 9-0 winners in the game to consolidate their place in the second half.
Arsenal had earlier lost out to Wolverhampton Wanderers in an entertaining clash at the Molineux staduim as Mikel Arteta's side surrendered an early goal lead after they were shown two red cards in the game.
Here's how the Premier league table looks like after Manchester united won and Arsenal lost
Manchester city currently top the table closely followed by fierce rivals Manchester united who moved within a point of Pep Guardiola's side following a mesmerizing 6-0 won over Southampton.
Defending champions Liverpool are in third place followed by Leicester city, West ham and Tottenham Hotspur.
