The league leaders welcomed Cagliari to the Guisseppe Meaza Stadium and they were odds favorites to secure all three points. However, it was a closely contested encounter between both teams and the first half ended without a goal from either team.
The breakthrough came for Inter in the second half through an unlikely source. Former Manchester United full back Matteo Darmian got on the end of Achraf Hakimi's cross to tap into an empty net in the 77th minute. The goal sparked outrageous celebration scenes in the stadium from the Inter Milan camp. Even head coach Antonio Conte, who is known to be an animated character on the touch line, joined in the pitch invasion and celebrations by the players and substitutes.
Conte was in an even happier mood when the final whistle went off.
By that win, Inter extended their lead at the top of Serie A to 11 points with 8 matches left. They are strong favorites to clinch the trophy now.
