What is Malware ?
Firstly, malware is a portmanteau for two words. It is coined by blending malicious and software. According to Wikipedia , malware is any software intentionally designed to cause damage to a computer, server, client, or computer network
Malware is different from software bug . While software bug is unintentional, malware is intentional. There are different types of Malware
1. The Trojan horse
3. Ransom ware
5 A backdoor virus etc
Spyware is a software that collect data and information on the device users and observe their phone activities( browsing etc) without their knowledge .
The mobile phone malware was found on :
"Anti-fraud firm Upstream found the malicious code on 53,000 Tecno handsets, sold in 'Ethiopia, Cameron, Egypt, Cabana and South Africa" . (BBC NEWS )
About Tecno Phones
Transsion Holdings is the manufacturer of Tecno phones. The mobile manufacturing company is based in China. It was the largest smartphone manufacturer by sales in Africa in 2017. Its brands includes Itel and Infinix. Tecno is also the official tablet and handset partner of Manchester City Football Club.
Transsion has came out to say that it was installed in the supply chain process without their knowledge.
The type of malware Found On the Phone
Triada Malware : Triada is a modular mobile Trojan that actively uses root privileges to substitute system files and uses several clever methods to become almost invisible (Kaspersky daily ). It exist mostly in the device's RAM, thereby making it hard to detect.
According to research this malware can lay its hands on the outgoing SMS and filters the incoming ones.Moreso, the Triada malware found by the firm on the Android smartphones installs malicious code known as xHelper which then finds subscription services and submits fraudulent requests on behalf of users, doing so invisibly and without the user's knowledge. Without doubt it is very harmful to the device user .
Also Triada it’s a modular Trojan, so it can be turned into literally everything on one command from the C&C server.
Geoffrey Cleaves, head of Upstream's Secure-D gives a clearer picture of the threat by saying that " the fact that the malware arrives pre-installed on handsets that are bought in their millions by typically low-income households tells you everything you need to know about what the industry is currently up against,"
Finally, tecno company's claims they are working on it "every single software installed on each device runs through a series rigorous security checks, such as our own security scan platform," . So great importance is attached to consumer data security and product security. Solution is already available for tecno W2 users through over-the-air or visit tecno after sales service center.
My personal advice is that the most effective way to fight this malware and other security threats to Android device is by being proactive. A good security solution is paramount. I hope this issue won't continue.
