Twitter disclosed some details of the breach, which affected a number of its Twitter accounts, on Wednesday evening, noting that investigations are still underway, but it was able to identify the effects of "a coordinated social engineering attack."
The company said that its preliminary investigations identified what it believed to be the effects of "a coordinated social engineering attack by people who had successfully targeted some of the company 's employees."
She added that the targeted employees "had access to the internal systems and tools", noting that the search is still underway for any breach of its information or any other malicious activities left by the perpetrators of the electronic attack.
The company stated that, upon learning of the breach, it had taken "essential steps to reduce entry to internal systems in conjunction with continuing investigations."
The company confirmed that it had closed the accounts that were under attack, and that it would not restore the full authority of the account holders to publish again unless its safety was first confirmed.
The term "social engineering attacks" is used to express the manipulation of people's behavior in order to compel them to disclose personal and protected information, and upon obtaining it, attackers use it to achieve their ultimate goal, which may range from obtaining sensitive information, promoting certain goods, or targeting public figures.
Accounts of prominent personalities on Twitter were hacked on Wednesday, including the account of American presidential candidate Joe Biden, reality TV star Kim Kardashian and former US President Barack Obama, in addition to billionaire Elon Musk and the famous American rapper Kanye West and many other accounts.
