Cross River State has been adjudged the preferred tourist destination in Nigeria. This was disclosed when the commissioner for Culture and Tourism Mr. Eric Anderson received the Board and Management of Greater Calabar City Development Authority who were on a visit to the art and craft village at the cultural center Calabar to asertain the level of preparadness for the yuletide celebrations.
Mr. Anderson said this year's christmas celebrations will be on low-key due to the outbreak of the novel Covid-19 pandemic and the #EndSARS protest which was hijacked by hoodlums, leading to vandalisation of government and private properties in the State.
Mr Anderson said, Cross River State has one of the best carnivals in the world but due to the novel Covid-19 pandemic, the annual event has been postponed due to the large participants and in flock of visitors to the state during the event but the art and craft village in cultural center is open with strict adherence to the guidelines and protocols for prevention of the spread of covid-19 pandemic as issued by NCDC and PTF.
The exhibition of the art and craft village has stands for the (18) eighteen Local Government Areas and private businesses owners to showcase their busineses and the rich culture of Cross River State.
Speaking during the tour, the Director General of Greater Calabar City Development Authority. Comrade Kingsley lta lkpeme opined that, the Calabar carnival is, without doubt, the biggest, best and longest tourism event in West Africa as it boost tourism and local economy and showcase our local contents, attracks over two million revellers and features participants from all over the world.
He called on all to see reasons with the government for the suspension of the carnival because the Ben Ayade's led Administration is interested in the welfare and safety of citizens and call on citizens to be safety and security concious as they go about the celebration.
In his response, the Board Chairman Mr. Bassey Effiom submited that because Calabar Carnival takes place in the month of December it also includes many Christmas festivities which give Calabar carnival that extra magical feelings once in a year during Christmas but regret the outbreak of the pandemic which brings negative consequences .
The visit featured tour round the cultural edifice with the Hon. Commissioner for Culture and tourism, introduction of the different gongs won by Cross River State contingents during cultural, arts and crafts competitions, visit to the different shops at the art and craft village, Photographs, etc.
