Igbos: Cannibalism Amongst The Ngwa People And Other Tribes In Nigeria, A Lie Or An Exaggerated Myth?

Cannibalism or Human cannibalism to be precise is the act or practice of humans eating the flesh or internal organs of other human beings. A person who practices cannibalism is called a cannibal.

The meaning of "cannibalism" has been extended into zoology to describe an individual of a species consuming all or part of another individual of the same species as food. This term although not frequently used in Nigeria always comes up in stories been passed from to mouth.

It is rumoured that some parts of Nigeria eats human beings as meat and that you should be careful should you head in that direction. These stories are either told by peers, elders or parents of our fellow Nigerians.

It is disheartening that most Nigerians actually believe that their are indeed cannibals lurking in some Nigerian villages and towns. An example one of of the towns often mentioned is the Ngwa land of Abia state also known as Aba-Ngwa.

However I believe this not to be true as my findings prove otherwise. If the Ngwa people are cannibals then how have the people of ohuhu been able to live for generations and at relative peace in Aba and environs, surrounded by cannibalistic Ngwa on all sides.

More so how did those who have managed to miraculously escape being eaten do so without the slightest evidence to show for their near-death experiences.

One would think that by now, after all these long years of supposedly capturing and eating people, The Ngwa's would be pros at this, and all you'd hear in the news are missing persons reports.

I have visited various towns in Ngwa land and they happen to be nice and good people of Nigeria, all my hind limbs are complete as well as my hands and legs.

Research on this cannibalism matter shows that this cannibal thing is a rumour that missionaries had blamed all Igbo and Ibibio peoples of.

The origin of these myths comes from the slurs some neighbouring villages threw at each other whilst trying to tarnish each others images.

Till today Ibibio people still call the Anang people cannibals, and the Anang people call the Ibibio people Camilla too, Igbos used to call the Ibibios cannibals, and the Ibibios the same to the Igbos.

I have also checked on other tribes I've heard of that eat people as food and they're all either untrue or rumors based on word passed from mouth to mouth.

There are no eye witness reports nor trustworthy documentaries proving that any part of Nigeria eats people.

People should stop spreading rumors like this as it brings down the reputation of our country at large.

Do you believe in this myth or have you experienced cannibalism first hand?
