The Nigerian Army says its recently launched ‘Exercise Golden Dawn’ in the South-East is aimed at curbing threats by secessionist agitators and other criminals in the region. The Commander 302 Artillery Regiment (General Support), Col Abdulkarim Usman is quoted by a national daily, The Punch, as saying threats by the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB); the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, necessitated the military intervention.

The independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has said that it will not negotiate with the Eastern Security Network in the coming Anambra election. Noting that the group has been outlawed by the Buhari regime. The chairman however said that the INEC has ruled out engaging the indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, and the Eastern Security Network, ESN ahead of the November Governorship election in Anambra State.
