The Eleme people belong to the Ogonoid language cluster although they have developed their own ethnic identity distinct from the Ogoni. For a long time they were known as the Mboli. In full, the term is Mba oil Iche, which means "one distinct people" in Igbo; and was said to have been given to them by Arochukwu traders.

Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, has appealed to Niger Delta youths staging protest in Eleme section of the East West Road to vacate the road so that contractors can commence work. The remains of a pastor buried in a shallow grave by kidnappers, has been exhumed by the operatives of the Rivers State Police Command. The pastor was kidnapped in Luorre Community, at Khana Local Government Area, Rivers state. The 56-year-old pastor, Friday Olakada, who was the General Overseer of the God Is Good Ministries, Agbochia, in Eleme Local Government Area, was abducted on May 14, by four men, who pretended to be passengers.

The Federal Government has granted N2.5 billion to repair the East-West route after it was recently blocked.
