The story of a Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk who burned himself to death

On June 11,1963,during the protest of the prosecution of Buddhist by south Vietnamese government led by Ngo Dinh Diem, a person named Quang Duc Self immolate himself       The photographs went viral round the world and brought attention to the policies of the Diem government. John F. Kennedy said in regard to a photograph of Quang Duc ablaze , "No news picture in history has generated so much emotion round the world as that one". Malcolm Browne won the Pulitzer prize for his photograph of the monk's death.

History: The Monk Who Burned Himself To Death

In June of 1963, Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk Thích Quang Duc burned himself to death at a busy intersection in Saigon. He was attempting to show that to fight all forms of oppression on equal terms, Buddhism too, needed to have its martyrs. One of America's greatest president, John F. Kennedy said in reference to a photograph of Duc on fire: “No news picture in history has generated so much emotion around the world as that one”.
