According to Reuters, Russia's Wagner private army claimed on Saturday that it had finally conquered the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut after the longest and bloodiest struggle of the war, while Kyiv denied the city had fallen but termed the situation there serious. If validated, Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin's assertion that his soldiers had finally forced the Ukrainians out of the city's remaining built-up region would equate to capturing Moscow's first major prize in more than ten months.

Wagner mercenary group leader accuses Russian troops of fleeing Bakhmut

The vicious Wagner mercenary group's leader took aim at the Russian army again on Thursday, accusing it of putting its men in danger by departing the scene of some of the war's deadliest combat, according to the New York Post. Yevgeny Prigozhin, who has often accused Russian military leaders of failing to back his paramilitary unit, said regular Russian forces are leaving area north and south of Bakhmut, the war-torn city where combat has been so ferocious that it has earned the nickname "the meat grinder."
